What is Respite Care?

Friday, July 30th, 2010
By Erin Gregson, Director of Operations and Co-owner of TLC Companion Care.

This blog entry focuses on the benefits of respite care — care that allows family members to take a break. We at TLC pride ourselves on providing personalized, hands-on care so that family caregivers can feel comfortable leaving a TLC caregiver with their loved one while taking much needed time for themselves.

In my day-to-day dealings for TLC Companion Care, I talk to a lot of people and I am always surprised at how few people even know that companion care exists. My aim is to spread the word about the benefits of companion care for the older adult community and their families. Our goal is to keep people in their homes for as long as possible with the help of caring companions to assist them with their day to day activities and keep them enjoying life!

Respite care allows for family caregivers to get a break from the daily routine of caregiving whether to take a much-needed vacation or just a few hours of time off. Respite is often referred to as “a gift of time.” (more…)

Medicaid & Financial Planning Services

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

Maureen K. Rulison of Medicaid & Financial Planning Services was my guest on The Caregiver Hour on June 28th.  She shared valuable information regarding the financial aspects of caregiving.  I received this wonderful story from one of Maureen’s clients and wanted to share it with you.  It’s comforting to know there are wonderful resources out there to help when we need more information.

“When I could no longer provide the level of care my Father required at my home, I sought the advice of his physician and his attorney as to what to do next. Both his Physician and Attorney advised us that a Nursing Home was eminent. His Attorney referred us to Medicaid & Financial Planning Services, Maureen K. Rulison, to receive assistance with protecting my Father’s assets and obtaining Medicaid eligibility to assist with the costs of Long Term Care. There was so much to learn about Medicaid, Medicare, and his insurance that it seemed overwhelming. Not to mention how we were going to be able to pay the $7,000 + a month bill to continue his care once Medicare and his insurance stopped paying. (more…)

Caregiving A WEDU Town Hall Meeting

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

On Saturday, June 12, 2010 I attended the Caregiving WEDU Town Hall meeting at the television station in downtown Tampa.

It was fun to see some familiar faces as I walked in the main lobby. Many of us knew each other from being in the professional healthcare field. We mingled and met some new people who were caregivers. The energy in the room was exciting.

Once we were seated in a U shape formation, Susan Howarth introduced herself. She is the new WEDU President and CEO. Her friendly and direct approach made me feel more comfortable as the business of setting up the tv camera and sound checks were being conducted.

Cathy Unruh, our host began by welcoming everyone and acknowledging the people who had participated in the previous Caregiver Town Hall meetings. For me as a  new comer, I found her to be engaging and calm.

The objective of the event was to provide caregivers the resources, services, and wisdom that is available in Tampa Bay and the surrounding area. For example, there was a nice mix of healthcare professionals including: geriatric care managers, elder law attorneys, home health companies, retirement communities, reverse mortgage experts, medical alert companies, USF medical professionals, representative from senior centers, Area Agency on Aging executives, etc. This large gathering created an holistic approach to helping caregivers who are having to deal with their role for the first time or continuing their caregiving journey. We, the audience as well as the viewers of the show, were able to see how the circle of resources and healthcare professionals were supporting all aspects of caregiving. I felt energized. (more…)
