Senior Living Guide’s 500 Lap Relay – Warming more than laps

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Several months ago I visited Senior Living Guide’s office to see for myself their newly dubbed space called the “Happy Room” where hundreds of lap blankets are waiting patiently to be handed out to seniors later this year.

The sight of all of these blankets did make you happy. It was if the variety of the colors, patterns and texture generated a sense of comfort and warmth.  I believe that SLG has hit the ball out of the park on this project that has not just benefited seniors who have fallen in the love with the art of knitting, but have fallen in the love the idea of living. This project has brought joy and purpose to many lives.  At The Caregiver Hour we say, “Yes, it would be great to live to 100 years old, but what really matters is the quality of life you lead throughout all your years.”

Enjoy the stories below from Jill at Senior Living Guide where she tells us about a few very special ladies contributing to the 500 Lap Relay.

When you are 96 years old and have Alzheimer’s, the days can be long for you and for your caregivers. Boredom and depression can be part of the daily routine, but not for “Mary” anymore. Mary’s health care provider, knowing that she knit years ago, suggested that she try knitting for Senior Living Guide’s 500 Lap Relay, a service project to provide 500 handmade lap blankets to seniors in wheelchairs. Sun Towers Retirement Community

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Joe and Greta McCloud moved from California to Kings Point in Sun City Center in 1993 to care for her parents who were beginning to decline. Once Greta’s parents passed away, she and Joe moved out of state and then decided to return to Kings Point for their own retirement years. “Kings Point offered everything we needed in a retirement community” said Greta. As Greta’s own health began to decline, she found herself hospitalized after a fall which led to a stay in Sun Terrace’s skilled nursing facility.

Greta says: “I was very impressed when I went to Sun Terrace from the hospital after having broken my back. They kindly convinced me that therapy was what I needed to walk again. I was treated with kindness and proficiency. I was out of it at first and slowly my mind came back and then my ability to walk again. I had to wear a back brace every time I got out of bed. The therapist adjusted my brace so I could easily put it on by myself. I would recommend Sun Terrace to anyone needing therapy. I attribute my recovery to Sun Terrace for all the help they gave me. They actually saved my life, as I no longer walk with a walker or use a wheelchair. When I left Sun Terrace, my husband and I moved to Sun Towers. Both places have very kind people who assist us with anything we need. It is wonderful.”

Sun Towers is a retirement community offering Independent, Assisted Living, Memory Care and skilled nursing all under one roof.

Join The Caregiver Hour Team at Memory Walk ’10

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Alzheimer’s disease is the seventh-leading cause of death in the United States today.  Senior Holistic Living & The Caregiver Hour are moving to stop it – and we’re asking you to join us!

We’re putting together a team and participating in the 2010 Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk®, the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer’s. By joining our team, (The Caregiver Hour Team), you can help end this epidemic and show your support for the more than 5 million individuals currently living with the disease.  It would mean so much to us if you would join Kim Linder, host of The Caregiver Hour, as a member of The Caregiver Hour Team for this year’s Memory Walk.

We’re on the MOVE to end Alzheimer’s disease!
