What is Respite Care?

Friday, July 30th, 2010
By Erin Gregson, Director of Operations and Co-owner of TLC Companion Care.

This blog entry focuses on the benefits of respite care — care that allows family members to take a break. We at TLC pride ourselves on providing personalized, hands-on care so that family caregivers can feel comfortable leaving a TLC caregiver with their loved one while taking much needed time for themselves.

In my day-to-day dealings for TLC Companion Care, I talk to a lot of people and I am always surprised at how few people even know that companion care exists. My aim is to spread the word about the benefits of companion care for the older adult community and their families. Our goal is to keep people in their homes for as long as possible with the help of caring companions to assist them with their day to day activities and keep them enjoying life!

Respite care allows for family caregivers to get a break from the daily routine of caregiving whether to take a much-needed vacation or just a few hours of time off. Respite is often referred to as “a gift of time.” (more…)

The Caregiver Hour – July 26, 2010

Hand to Hope with Stacy Self

On Monday, July 26, 2010, Stacy Self and her mother Kathy Cook were guests on The Caregiver Hour. It was exciting and fun because we had an important message to share with our listeners, and we did it in a fun way. We told a story. We allowed emotions to erupt. We made it feel authentic. This is how we make caregiving important but not always serious.

Stacy and her family have clearly been through an ordeal. No one wants their dad to be injured and not know what the outcome may be from one moment to the next. No one wants their mom to suffer and worry. But that is their story for the last 18 months and it’s amazing to see what these 2 women have created to help other caregivers in our Tampa Bay community. Medicaid & Financial Planning Services

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

Maureen K. Rulison of Medicaid & Financial Planning Services was my guest on The Caregiver Hour on June 28th.  She shared valuable information regarding the financial aspects of caregiving.  I received this wonderful story from one of Maureen’s clients and wanted to share it with you.  It’s comforting to know there are wonderful resources out there to help when we need more information.

“When I could no longer provide the level of care my Father required at my home, I sought the advice of his physician and his attorney as to what to do next. Both his Physician and Attorney advised us that a Nursing Home was eminent. His Attorney referred us to Medicaid & Financial Planning Services, Maureen K. Rulison, to receive assistance with protecting my Father’s assets and obtaining Medicaid eligibility to assist with the costs of Long Term Care. There was so much to learn about Medicaid, Medicare, and his insurance that it seemed overwhelming. Not to mention how we were going to be able to pay the $7,000 + a month bill to continue his care once Medicare and his insurance stopped paying. (more…)

Tranquility Tips for Caregivers

posted by Kristen Leigh of Sweet Escape Yoga

This week, I had the opportunity to join Kim Linder, host of The Caregiver Hour, in the Clear Channel studios in Tampa, FL. Along with Viki Kind, I was a guest on Monday’s Radio Show where we discussed Compassion in a variety of ways.

Kim shared some thought-provoking insights on how being an effective caregiver includes turning that compassion toward yourself in order to bring your best self to those you care for. Then, Viki shared some good stuff from her book, The Caregiver’s Path to Compassionate Decision Making on how to be respectful and wise when making decisions for those who can’t decide for themselves. And, finally we talked about how caregivers can take a moment – both at work and throughout their day – to de-stress and refocus their attention in order to help feel a sense of balance while managing their unique responsibilities. (Click here to listen to the 7/5/10 recording.)

Here are a few tips I shared (plus a couple extras) for simple, do-anywhere ways to take a yoga moment for yourself:

  1. The first and most simple thing you can do is breathe. Seems obvious, right? Yet, when we get stressed in work and in life, we tend to breathe in a way that’s very quick and shallow or even hold our breath altogether (neither of which are conducive to calm). Lengthening your breath will automatically start to calm you down. Breathe deeply, using your diaphragm (meaning your belly should expand as you inhale), and fill up your lungs completely. Then, when exhaling, slowly try to release all of the air and empty the lungs. A wonderful tool to help you focus on your breath and away from your stress, is square breathing. I wrote all about it (and some optional meditative elements) last week in my blog post Simple Stress Relief w/Square Breathing.         (more…)
